Being banished never tasted so good!

In the next few weeks DuClaw will be launching our eXile Series. What is the eXile Series you ask! Well it is our experimental small batch series. Like our seasonal releases, these beers will be periodically released through out the year. But eXile beers differ from our seasonals in two big ways. First, these are small batches – about half the amount or less are produced of an eXile beer compared to a seasonal. Secondly, eXile beers will be released with much less ‘fanfare’ than our seasonals – no videos, no giveaways, no logos. Just an email (and blog mention) when they are to go on tap.

These beers are experiments; not meant to be liked by all. What they allow us to do is flex our ‘brewing creativity’ muscles. For example, our first release in our eXile Series is an Imperial Chocolate Rye Porter!!! That is a mouthful, and after sampling some today…it is a mouthful.

This Impy Chocolate Rye Porter is brewed with chocolate rye malt and real chocolate giving the beer a complex, yet silky smooth character. The chocolate is not overwhelming, but superiorly layered within the beer. The Rye malt enhances the aroma and contributes a distinct roasted flavor, which adds a good bit of depth and character. The original gravity starts at 19.5 plato and ends with a final gravity of 5.7 plato, with an alcohol content of 7.7% abv.

After tasting it today, it is quite seductive. The chocolate creates a silky mouthfeel, making it quite drinkable, but it is full of flavor. Look for the beer to go on tap the beginning of April. And this beer is only the beginning…..

When are we going to see Twisted Kilt again – I love the beer and need more T-Shirts!!

  2. Dave Benfield
    Says:

Bill – Kilt is not in our seasonal rotation this year. Every year we have to make tough choices on bringing new beers to market and which beers to put on the shelf that year. And Kilt is being tucked away for this year (and this year only!) so we can release Pax Nemesis as a seasonal. I hate to bring disappointing news. But if it helps, Pax Nemesis is a delicious Imperial Alt…and I can’t think of any other brewery which has brewed that style!!

    and what about Naked Fish??

  4. Dave Benfield
    Says:

@Melody – Naked Fish is tentatively scheduled to return next February. We have gotten many requests for the return of Fish.

@Alice – Repent is not on our schedule this year. But there are some talks about having in 22oz bottles next year.

    Cheers,

I’d love to see the return of Naked Fish because it’s my favorite. I was a little sad it wasn’t in the rotation this year, but I was VERY excited to see Euphoria added to the staple beers. For the eXile series, I would like to see a super-hopped red ale. Not many breweries do them and they can be unbelievably tasty. Best examples of this style right now are Gordon by Oskar Blues and Hop Head Red by Green Flash.

Funk? It was one of my favorites, and I haven’t seen it for awhile

  9. Dave Benfield
    Says:

@Mike – Unfortunately, Funk is not in the rotation this year. I love it though, especially during the summer. It is on the table for 2011, but it has some tough challengers!

    Cheers,
    Dave

I am very sad that Twisted Kilt is not on the release schedule this year. I always schedule my fall visit to my daughters house for the Real Ale Festival and the Twisted Kilt release…. please bring it back next year … because my daughter will miss me!

    Says:

Oh, Yes please, Sir! May I have another Naked Fish?!

Now looking forward to February 2011 with great relish.

  12. Dave Benfield
    Says:

@Rob – No worries, my friend. Kilt will be on next year, you can take that one to the bank!

    Cheers,
    Dave

    Says:

what about sawtooth while everyone is asking?

  15. Dave Benfield
    Says:

@Nate – not sure if you are asking when Sawtooth comes out next or if it will be a mainstay. So let’s go with the first one. When is Sawtooth coming out next? Well for you Nate, my friend, how about two weeks?! Yep. Two weeks. Make sure you are on the email list and check your inbox early next week.

As far as a mainstay, there have been some serious discussions. And you know it is big when we are serious about anything! But, no plans this year for it to be a mainstay.
    Cheers,
    Dave

I would love to see Funk make a return. That s a great beer. Happy to have Euphoria as a staple, and the Impy Chocolate Rye is awesome!

  17. Danielle P.
    Says:

@Dave What IS the release date for the Pax Nemesis? You guys were promo-ing it before Baltimore Oktoberfest… then nothing. When?

@Carlin Like hops? Try fellow local brewery Heavy Seas (formerly Clipper City)’s Double D.I.P.A. It’s part of the 22oz. Mutiny series and it’s re-donk-ulous in it’s hoppiness.

  18. Dave Benfield
    Says:

@Danielle – it is scheduled for late this month for 22oz bombers. And just an FYI, Pax is an Imperial Alt, which we have never seen before. And it is extremely drinkable at the 11% alcohol!.

what about sawtooth while everyone is asking?

  20. Dave Benfield
    Says:

@Amy – Sawtooth is on tap right now! Not sure how long, so if I were you I would drop anything you have planned today and go get some! :)

    Cheers,
    Dave

    Hey there
Any chance we will see Retribution? That was seriously good beer!

  22. you state that you used chocolate to brew with…

did you use cocoa nibs or actual chocolate… and if you used actual chocolate was it cocoa powder …

i have so many questions. sorry i am just curious…

i have used cocoa nibs and coco powder in personal home brews before and they both turned out amazing… so i am just curious as to what my mouth should get ready for ;)

  23. Dave Benfield
    Says:

Cocoa nibs are the base. Plus a special ingredient, that unfortunately I can not divulge. But, mainly cocoa nibs.

After listening to Jim on the Brewing Network and hearing the BN rave about the Imperial Chocolate Rye Porter, I was wondering if you’d be willing to post a recipe so us homebrewers might try to replicate this delicious sounding beer? Cheers from Milwaukee, WI!

  26. Dave Benfield
    Says:

Meegs, Thanks for the comment. We have released some of our beer recipes for homebrew in the past, so it is possible. I will check with Jim and see what we can do.

    Cheers,
    Dave

    Says:

Terrell, thanks for the love. We will continue to get beer up there! Glad you enjoyed it.

    Cheers,
    Dave
