Divine Retribution Series #1
Written by Dave Benfield
December 9th, 2011

In early spring of 2011, we brewed an Imperial Stout for the sole purpose of allowing it to age for 6 months inside Kentucky White Oak Bourbon barrels, and RETRIBUTION was born. When the last barrel of Retribution stopped filling just past the half full mark, we were hit by an epiphany: Let’s fill the barrel the remainder of the way with COLOSSUS. We had no idea how it would taste, but we decided to leave it to fate.

Retribution is the embodiment of patience, craft and perseverance. But, waiting 6 months to try our experimental blend was perhaps the ultimate exercise in these virtues. The resulting 15.5% abv 60/40 blend of Retribution and Colossus was nothing short of divine. Such an extraordinary beer requires extraordinary packaging. The bottle labels were printed on a 100 year old Chandler & Price platen press (similar to a Heidelberg) named “Bessy” by Gilah Press in Baltimore using specially selected paper to convey the handcrafted precision of the beer.

Because the labels were “crafted printed”, they do not have pre-applied adhesive, making them unusable in our automated bottle labeler. But, in the true spirit of our craft, our creative director and brewery staff numbered, applied the labels to the bottles, and wax sealed them by hand to complete packaging worthy of our Divine Retribution.

We put our hearts and souls into this beer, and it is BEYOND AMAZING. Only 168 bottles of DIVINE RETRIBUTION series #1 were produced and they will be hitting the shelves of select retailers today, so grab one of these extremely limited edition bottles before they’re gone! Oh, and in answer to the inevitable question this post will spur, YES, there will be a DIVINE RETRIBUTION series #2. What we will blend with Retribution in series #2, however, is the real question. Enjoy.

Craft be cherished…Rules be damned!

Tried my local store but he said something about DuClaw not selling to MD distributors. ????

Any idea if stores in Charles County got any?

    Says:

We do sell to MD distributors, but unfortunately we do not have any for Charles County. We will get there soon, probably February. Divine will be in Baltimore County/City, Harford, Carroll, Howard and Anne Arundel. But we only have 14 cases, so only 14 retailers got any.

    Cheers

How about you stop with the ridiculous games and just list which stores have this? I would love to get a bottle, but I am quite fed up trying to run all over, figuring out who has DuClaw at all, much which ones the carry.

    Lo,
I apologize for the frustration. We sell to distributors, and they in turn sell to the retailers. It takes a few days before we get a list. Just got it on Friday, and here it is:

    State Line (Elkton)
    Perfect Pour (Columbia)
    Honeygo (Perry Hall)
    Wine World (Bel Air)
    Friendship (Bel Air)
    Wine Source (Baltimore)
    Shawan (Hunt Valley)
    College Square (Westminster)
    Dawson’s (Severna Park)
    Fishpaw’s (Severna Park)

Just to update my earlier comment. This is what I know as of Friday. We had 14 cases, and there are only 10 retailers listed. I am working getting the others.

Perfect Pour may be sold out. I called this morning and they had one bottle left.

    Says:

It is confirmed, Perfect Pour is out.

If you could updated the list ASAP for the remaining 4 it would be appreciated. I tried emailing the brewery back in october for more info on where it was going to be released and I never heard back.

    Says:

The list is accurate and final. We did not know when the beer would be released, due to TTB label approval.

I just got #125 at the Perfect Pour last night! :-)

Can this beer be left to sit and age in the bottle? Will it get better with age?

  11. Dave Benfield
    Says:

Yep, you can age the beer in a cool, dark place for as long as you like.

    Cheers,
    Dave
